While working with your tractor after a rainy day, you may find yourself unexpectedly stuck in the mud. Sometimes, your tractor just cannot break through thick, sticky mud on its own and you have to figure out how you’re going to get it free. These practical tips should help you resume your work more quickly.

Reverse Slowly

If trying to push forward has only entrenched your tractor deeper into the muck, you should try raising your implement and putting the tractor in reverse to see if backing out works better. If the wheels spin and you make no progress, stop and try something else.

Grab Boards & a Shovel

Some wide planks of wood and a shovel might come to your aid. Park your tractor and place boards behind the tires to give you more traction. Use your shovel to dig some of the mud out from around each tire, then get in the cab and try to reverse again.

Call a Friend

If all else fails, you may be able to call a neighbor who can bring over their tractor, hitch it up to your own, and drag you back onto solid ground. Just make sure that you’ve raised your implement out of the way, that the chains you use are secure, and that the second tractor doesn’t also get stuck!
