Before you take your baler out into the field, you need to make sure that it is in good condition and ready to work as intended. Attempting to use a broken or damaged baler will result in inefficiency at best and an accident at worst. That’s why the experts at Bucklin Tractor & Implement have created this pre-season baler checklist.

Find Your Owner’s Manual

Your owner’s manual is an invaluable source of information regarding your baler and how to maintain it. Always consult your manual before attempting maintenance and follow its advice in the letter.

Cleaning

Ideally, you should start getting your baler ready about a month before you actually plan to use it. That way, you’ll have enough time to book a service appointment if you find anything wrong. Start by cleaning your baler. Not only does removing built-up dirt and dust help discourage deterioration, but it’s also a great chance to inspect your baler for signs of wear and tear. Cleaning your baler throughout the baling season can also help you avoid contaminating the product.

Chain, Belts, Bearing, etc.

Your next step will be to lubricate your baler’s chain. While making sure that enough lubricant gets where it needs to go can be time-consuming, it’s well worth it in the long run. Once that step is completed, give your baler a complete inspection. All bearings should be tightened, all belts should be free of frays and tears, and any broken/dull teeth should be sharpened or replaced. You should also check the hoses for leaks, inspect the tires, and make sure that the twine setup is just right. It’s easy to accidentally miss things, so you may want to perform repeated inspections.

Spare Parts

Finding compatible parts on short notice can be difficult. That’s why we highly recommend keeping a few spare parts in stock. This will allow you to resolve any minor maintenance issues you find without having to scramble to find what you need or get a service appointment before the baling season begins.
